The EU is being called upon to ensure that meat imported from third countries is of the same standards and traceability as meat produced in Europe.

Speaking in the European Parliament on 25 November, South West MEP Graham Watson said the EU needs to do more to make sure European consumers know what they are eating and that it is safe.

After the session, he said;

"People from my constituency have experienced their fair share of farming crises, and have worked hard to introduce high standards.

"The EU owes it to these people, and consumers more generally, to ensure that meat produced in countries like Brazil is clearly labelled and safe.

"We must share resources and experience to make sure that this is the case."
