Watson slams UKIP message on our Post Offices3.05.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Mon 9th Jun 2008
As communities across the South West fight the closure their local Post Offices, local Lib Dem MEP Graham Watson hits out at UKIP claims that the government plans for the Post Office being due to "Brussels". Commenting earlier today Graham Watson said; "UKIP have been keen to blame Government plans for our Post Office network on Brussels in a desperate and cynical attempt to get publicity. The fact remains our Post Offices are closing due to the Labour Government removing many of the key services the network has relied on. The Government have undermined the Post Office Account for Pensions and Benefits, and they have taken away services such as BBC licence fee renewals." Graham went on to point out; "Rather than telling the 'truth,' UKIP are keen to mislead. As I have seen in European Parliament UKIP representatives like to snipe from the sidelines without offering any alternatives. Our communities are not best served by UKIPs simplistic and defeatist view on Post Offices. Liberal Democrats will continue to campaign to save our Post Offices. We know people power does work".
