Brown heads to Lisbon for a free lunch

3.25.00pm GMT Wed 12th Dec 2007

Commenting on Gordon Brown's decision to skip the signing of the EU treaty and arrive in Lisbon at midday, European Liberal Democrat Leader Graham Watson MEP said:

"It comes as no surprise that Gordon Brown exercised his opt out again by shirking the signing ceremony and showing up late for lunch. But this is not without its consequences. If Britain wants to keep its place at EU's top table it must realise there is no such thing as a free lunch.

Brown's cartwheels to appease a Eurosceptic press are the latest in a long history of British Government dithering and delay over Europe dating back to the Messina conference in 1955".
