CALLING NOTICE: Lords, Ladies and Gentlemen team up to connect Parliament with Cornwall: Truro, Monday 1st October 200712.45.00pm BST (GMT +0100) Fri 28th Sep 2007 Local MEP Graham Watson will be joined on Monday by Julia Goldsworthy, MP for Falmouth and Camborne, and Liberal Democrat Peer, Lord Paul Tyler of Linkinhorne, to launch an initiative aimed at better connecting people in Cornwall with the UK and European Parliaments. The 'Connecting Parliament with Cornwall Initiative' will take place in the Library of the Alverton Manor Hotel, Truro at 10:30 on Monday 1st October. Monday's event is the start of a week long series of events spread around Cornwall aimed at bridging the gap between the public and parliament, in particular for those who find it difficult to visit Parliament or who feel that distance or lack of understanding precludes them from involvement. If the Cornish pilot is successful, this scheme will be rolled-out nationwide. For Graham Watson, this is a welcome initiative: "From a European perspective, I hope this will help to show people that European politics is not something that is just 'over there in Brussels'. What happens at the European Parliament affects people in Cornwall in the same way that our national politics at Westminster and our local politics do." Press and broadcast media are invited to attend the press launch where there will be a photo opportunity and a chance to put questions to Lord Tyler, Graham Watson and Julia Goldsworthy as well as representatives from local government.
