Graham Watson - Liberal Democrat MEP for South-West England and Gibraltar

The ordeal will only be over once the nurses and doctor will be allowed home

12.48.11pm BST (GMT +0100) Wed 18th Jul 2007

Commenting on the Libyan High Judicial Council's decision to convert the death sentence of the Bulgarian nurses and the Palestinian doctor into a prison term, Graham Watson, Leader of the Liberal and Democrat Group, said:

"Libya has taken the correct decision to avoid retreat from international rehabilitation. After a long, exhausting and dramatic negotiation, a dark affair is coming to an end.

The fact that the death penalty has been converted to a prison sentence is good news. However, the ordeal will finish only when Libya allows the extradition of the nurses and the doctor and they can finally go back to their own country".
