European Liberals and Democrats underline the importance of a strategic partnership with Russia which respects human rights12.00.00am GMT Wed 22nd Nov 2006 On the eve of the EU-Russia summit, the state of human rights and freedom of press in Russia could not be bleaker. ALDE calls on the EU to look beyond its own economic interests and be bold and courageous towards Russia. Graham Watson, Leader of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats in the European Parliament states that: "We challenge Russia to liberate itself from the shackles of authoritarianism, permit the free expression of opinion and guarantee an independent and functioning judiciary that will protect all citizens of Russia from fear and violence. We wish to build good economic and commercial relations with Russia but believe that the next generation agreement between the EU and Russia must be based on a stronger common understanding of democracy and human rights." Professor Bronislaw Geremek (Poland, PD) says: "The defence of liberties and the respect for human rights are fundamental to the process of modernisation and political development. For both the EU and Russia as well as for their strategic relationship, it is vital not to forget this". "The EU must respect the principles of European solidarity when negotiating trade issues with Russia but also bear in mind the energy needs for Europe's future economic growth."
