Prodi's government, a competent team to re-launch Italy's role in Europe2.35.56pm BST (GMT +0100) Thu 18th May 2006 Graham WATSON, Liberal Democrat group leader in the European Parliament, congratulated Romano Prodi on finally being able to form a government after the delaying tactics and refusal by Silvio Berlusconi to recognise his defeat at the polls. Three former MEPs from the ALDE group have been appointed as key players within the new government: Antonio DI PIETRO(Italia dei Valori) as Infrastructure Minister, Emma BONINO (Radical party) as Minister of European Affairs and Enrico LETTA (Margherita) as Cabinet under-Secretary. "Romano Prodi has the vision, international reputation and technical ability to set Italy back on track after five years in the wilderness", said Graham Watson. "As new Infrastructure Minister, Antonio di Pietro will have the difficult task of contributing to Italy's urban and economic development, whilst focusing on political priorities which need to be rebalanced after Berlusconi's confusing policies". "The appointment of Emma Bonino will considerably boost Italy's European credentials, which had reached an all time low. Emma is experienced in all of the three Brussels-based institutions. She is a committed campaigner and an ardent European. Italy can now move forward with a bounce in its step." "Enrico Letta, as Cabinet under-Secretary of the new government's presidency, will undoubtedly play an important role. His mediating and diplomatic skills will be invaluable in the delicate position he will hold" Lapo PISTELLI, ALDE Member and leader of the Margherita in the European Parliament added: "Finally we will be able to work with a sensible and active government on European issues. Romano Prodi's experience in Brussels, together with his newly formed team, guarantees that Italy will earn back its role as a key player on the European stage. There is no time to waste. Members of the Margherita party in the EP, together with the elected representatives of the Unione, look forward to building with the new government a winning strategy for Europe".
