EU communication policy needs complete overhaul

6.22.22pm GMT Wed 1st Feb 2006

Reacting to the Commission's publication of its long-awaited White Paper on Communication policy today in Brussels, Graham Watson, leader of the Liberals and Democrats in the European Parliament, welcomed Vice-President Wallström's new focus on a citizens-based approach as "long overdue".

"Citizens feel ignored, uncertain of the motives of Brussels' policy makers and no longer certain of what the European Union is actually for," said Watson

"If the EU is to become more relevant it needs to spend more time focusing on what really matters to its citizens - employment opportunities, economic prosperity, security, efficient public services, a clean environment and responsible government and find ways of sharing the best of Europe without trying to impose or manage everything centrally."

"The EU has much going for it. But it has failed to communicate enthusiasm and optimism to those who hold its future in their hands. This is a crucial juncture and, if misjudged, could risk placing Europe and its grand project beyond redemption."
