'Government finally sees sense over school milk' - Watson

12.00.00am GMT Tue 17th Jan 2006

Graham Watson, Euro-MP for South West England and Gibraltar, today welcomed the government's announcement that they will continue to jointly subsidise school milk with the European Union.

Graham Watson said:

"Thank heavens the UK government has finally come to its senses and will continue to make use of the EU funding which allows over 40,000 British school children to receive subsidised school milk".

Milk - now here to stay in West schools

The welcome news came only a week after Graham Watson's most recent efforts to draw the nutritional plight of UK school children to the attention of Defra, the government department responsible for the original proposal to put an end to the scheme. Graham Watson continued:

"The issue of subsidised school milk has crossed my desk time and time again in my 12 years as a Member of the European Parliament. Although today's news is positive, let's hope this is the last time school milk is threatened in this way".
