Europe defends rights of British cross channel shoppers

12.00.00am BST (GMT +0100) Thu 8th Jul 2004

Welcoming yesterday's formal notice by the European Commission of intention to prosecute Gordon Brown for denying the British shoppers the right to buy cheaper abroad, South West Lib Dem MEP Graham Watson said:

"Labour's high tax regime sends our shoppers flocking to the continent to buy cheaper booze and cigarettes. Our penny-pinching and party-pooping Chancellor has been bullying people out of their right to do this by seizing goods and cars when they return. I have campaigned for 5 years to get the European Commission to protect British citizens' rights. I am pleased that Dutch Lib Dem Commissioner Frits Bolkestein is giving Gordon Brown his comeuppance."
